Old Pulteney had two defining characteristics. Firstly, it is known as the maritime malt for its subtle salty flavor. Secondly, it used to be the northernmost distillery on the Scottish mainland. But it hasn’t been since Wolfburn opened several years ago. However, flavor is more important than location, and that saline influence is still there. Try to spot it in the Old Pulteney, 16 Y, a single malt that was initially released for Travel Retail. It matured in American oak bourbon barrels and Oloroso sherry-seasoned Spanish oak casks.
